This clean sheet means that Manchester City have now only kept more clean sheets than Liverpool in the Premier League this season. It is also means that Reina is still in with a chance of winning the Golden Glove award as Joe Hart currently has 13 clean sheets and Petr Cech has 10, with 10 Premier League matches still to play this season.
Reina’s clean sheet tally this season though is more impressive when you take into account that Reina has played in five less matches than Hart and three less than Cech this season.
The Spaniard has actually won the Golden Clove award three times before in his career at Liverpool, with those awards coming in three consecutive seasons between 2005 and 2008.
Reina has a chance of picking up the award for a fourth time this season then if he can maintain the same level of performance that he showed against Wigan and if Liverpool’s back four can put on impressive displays between now and the end of the season, with Reina acknowledging that it’s not just the goalkeeper that keeps clean sheets.
“I don’t know about that (the award) but I do know it is good to be in there, among the best,” said Reina.
“In terms of the defensive record, it is about the team. But the fundamental for any proper team is to build from the back. We need to be competitive by defending and that is the principal objective.”
